Gilgit-Baltistan Inspector General of Police (IGP) Afzal Mahmood Butt has announced a major breakthrough in the investigation into the attack on Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) leader Qazi Nisar Ahmad.
At a press conference, IGP Butt confirmed that major arrests had been made in connection with the October 5 incident, which left six people injured, including senior Sunni cleric Qazi Nisar himself.
The IGP revealed that the police managed to identify and apprehend individuals directly involved in the attack, as well as those who facilitated it at different stages.
Two main perpetrators involved in the physical attack were arrested, with one of them identified as Naeem Abbas, son of Sultan Ali, who the IGP named as the mastermind behind the attack.
The two main suspects apprehended are said to be from the Rondu region in Skardu. According to the IGP, the full list of names of all those involved in the attack is now known to the authorities.
The terrorist operation involved a total of nine individuals traveling in two separate vehicles: five in one car and four in the other. Police also arrested the central facilitator, believed to be from Jalalabad, Gilgit.
