Brian Tyree Henry plays a thief by fearing for his life while treating his painful past in the grainy criminal drama “Dope Thief”, a role that the American actor said looked like “a return”.
The mini-series in eight parts features Henry as Ray and the actor of “Narcos” Wagner Moura in the role of Manny, two friends of Philadelphia who arise as AGENTS DEA to steal trap houses. But when they get a descent into an unknown rural house, they trigger a dangerous whole of events that sees them run from a cartel as well as the police.
“There was so much about (Ray) who resonated with me. I saw this man who was facing generational trauma, trying to find a way to do it, trying to find a way to be taken care of “Henry, known for films such as” Transformers One “,” Bullet Train “and” Causeway “, for which he obtained an Oscar appointment, told Reuters.
“It allowed me to deposit a lot of my charges that I had worn … It was definitely another transition for me … to rise and how to manage my emotions and face my abandonment, to face my fear and to face all these different things.
“And so, Ray was actually the first time for a long time that I had the impression of having come home. He felt like a return in a way.”
At the heart of “Dope Thief” is the long friendship between Ray and Manny and how they deal with their difficulties.
“The show is violent. There is a lot of violence and crime and race and you have this black and Latin man, we have already seen this kind of show,” said Henry.
“But … we wanted to show tenderness between these two, friendship.”
“Dope Thief” is based on the 2009 novel by Dennis Tafoya, but the program is moving away from the book, said the creator of the Peter Craig series.
“I liked that (Tafoya) really got two novels in one. The second half is very internal, so I liked the idea of simply using the first half and then having a lot of room for invention,” he said.
