A new survey finds that 52% of Americans want Congress to impeach US President Trump now.
The poll conducted by veteran progressive polling firm Celinda Lake recorded 790 voters. The survey results showed that 52% of people support impeachment, while 40% oppose it.
The investigation focused on impeachment for two particular reasons: Trump’s war in Iran and the unleashing of violent ICE agents in American cities. Legal experts say both violate the Constitution.
In the case of Democrats, 84% support impeachment, while 94% strongly favor it.
For Republicans, 81% do not support impeachment, but 14% do. Among independents, 55% support impeachment, while 34% oppose it.
But the question remains: Can Trump actually be impeached? Impeachment requires a simple majority in the House. But to be convinced, you need a two-thirds vote in the Republican-led Senate, a high bar.
For the moment, the votes are not there on either side of the Capitol. Rep. Al Green, Democrat of Texas, tried twice in the past year to impeach Trump through privilege resolutions, but both failed.
The main question is whether public pressure will succeed where legal reasoning has failed to influence Congress.
