Capital to obtain criminal surveillance fueled by AI

Islamabad:

No criminal entering the federal capital will be able to escape the eyes of the cameras of the sure city. 3,200 additional ultramodern cameras equipped with facial recognition and traffic violation detection will soon be installed, considerably improving the City Project in Islamabad.

Islamabad SAFE City, Shakir Hussain Dawar, shared this at a press conference on Thursday with crime journalists. He said that an RS17.4 billion PC-1 had been prepared and submitted to modernize the SAFE city initiative.

The DG Dawar stressed that in light of the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI), the federal interior minister Mohsin Naqvi and Islamabad Ig Ali Nasir Rizvi pay particular attention to the upgrading of the infrastructure of the safe city. Currently, 2,758 cameras are installed throughout the city, including 700 AI compatible. The planned addition of 3,200 AI advanced cameras will bring almost 100% Islamabad under the camera surveillance, allowing the authorities to maintain a complete recording of each individual entering the city.

In addition to new cameras, seven high -power servers are also integrated into the system. These servers will improve the capacities of new and existing cameras, allowing facial recognition, detection of license plates and other critical features.

The DG Dawar revealed that, thanks to the current surveillance system, 77 criminal gangs have been identified and 32 have already been apprehended. The authorities actively continue the remaining 45 gangs. Real -time surveillance is carried out at the head office of the Safe City, and any suspicious activity or individuals is immediately reported to the police units on the ground, often leading to rapid arrests.

He also mentioned that when the City project was initially launched, only a few cameras had facial recognition capacities. However, more advanced AI cameras have since been purchased. With upgrades to come, the cameras mounted on the roofs will be able to capture clear images of individuals inside moving vehicles, allowing precise identification.

E-Post control points are also used to monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. In the past year, these systems have led to the arrest of 1,000 people sought in various cases and the recovery of more than 1,000 stolen vehicles.

DG Dawar noted that vehicle flights are more common in the urban areas of Islamabad. Currently, the whole system of cameras works on two servers. Plans are underway to install 14 new powerful and expensive servers, which will allow the cameras either to operate with AI capabilities.

In addition, new optical fiber cables are placed throughout the city to support this extended infrastructure. These efforts aim to improve public security and allow faster apprehension of criminals.

He added that the suspects involved in several recent recent crimes have been arrested through IA technology and surveillance images. The system automatically generates alerts if a known criminal enters the camera beach.

“About 60 to 70% of criminals in Islamabad come from outside the city, which is why we focus more on the entry and exit points in the capital,” he said.
