Islamabad:
The Chief Elections Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja praised the Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP) on Thursday to reach an important stage by reducing the gap between the sexes in the electoral lists of 11.8% in 2018 to 7.4% by January 2025.
Inaugurating the fifth phase of the registration campaign for CNIC women / voters at International Women’s Day 2025, alongside the four members of the Electoral Commission, the election commissioner said that this achievement highlights the continuous efforts of the PCE to promote inclusivity and gender equality in the electoral process. Progress of the campaign as a testimony to implacable ECP efforts.
Raja underlined the complete approach to the electoral commission to further reduce the gap between the sexes in the electoral lists, calling it as shared legal responsibility of the ECP and the Nadra, not just a promotional campaign.
He praised the dedication of the team and partners for their tireless work to ensure a representation of inclusive voters during the previous four phases.
The last four phases of the campaign have emphasized the promotion of electoral participation on a basis equal to women and other marginalized groups.
Significant measures have been taken to improve inclusion in the electoral process and advance gender equality, marking a crucial step towards the guarantee of a fair representation for all.
The commissioner stressed that democracy prosperous when each voice is heard and that each citizen has the opportunity to shape his future by his vote.
By referring to the constitutional mandate of the electoral commission, he stressed the importance of special measures under article 25 and articles 47 and 48 of the law of 2017 to ensure the inclusion of marginalized women and groups.
He underlined the need for collaboration efforts between the Electoral Commission and Nadra to achieve this objective.
