The movement of the Muttahida Qaumi (MQM-P) movement and deputy parliamentary chief of the Sindh Assembly, Taha Ahmed Khan, wrote a letter to the chief judge of Pakistan, asking him to take an opinion on the growing number of fatal traffic accidents in Karachi.
In his letter, Taha expressed deep sadness because of the tragic death of a pregnant woman, her husband and their child, who was forced to be born prematurely due to the accident, during the recent incident of Malir Halt.
He said that since the beginning of 2025, 207 people have died and 2,623 have been injured in traffic accidents across Karachi.
Calling on immediate action, he demanded strict measures against those responsible for the tragedy of Malir Halt. “The Sindh government compensates those who die after consuming toxic liqueurs – why not the citizens of Karachi?” questioned.
He urged the chief judge to impose strict restrictions on the movement of illegal waste and heavy vehicles and to take rapid measures to ensure the safety of the life and property of the citizens of Karachi.
The head of the MQM also called for strict legal action against violations of traffic laws and criminal neglect. He demanded compensation for families of people killed in accidents, improvements in road conditions and the installation of the city’s floor lamp.
Taha stressed that the growing number of accidents violates articles 9 and 25 of the Constitution. He called for a strict application of the 1965 engine vehicle prescription and the Sindh 1969 motor vehicle rules and action against violations under articles 279 and 304-A of the Pakistan Criminal Code.
It also urged the allocation of specific time and routes for heavy vehicles, the implementation of speed cameras, effective Challan systems and vehicle fitness checks. “Innocent lives are lost,” he said, “and the Supreme Court must be careful immediately.”
Earlier, an eyewitness told heartbreaking details of a tragic road accident in which an oil tanker was recklessly chased in a young man and his pregnant wife and caused a premature birth of their baby who also died on the spot.
The young couple, identified as Abdul Qayum and his wife Zainab and the residents of Malir Cantt, returned to their homes after a record before delivery to Kohi Goth hospital when the accident occurred near Malir Halt Flyover in Model Colony.
“We, me and my wife, have exceeded Malir Halt on our motorcycle when the tragic accident occurred,” said Eyewitness Mashkoor Khan, speaking exclusively to the Express PK Press Club.
“My wife was the first to locate the imprudent water tanker coming from the wrong side of the road,” he recalls. “I also saw him when he was brushing three or four vehicles before running on a sidewalk and crushing a couple of motorcycle origin.”
