Chinese FM, COA discuss regional security, counterterrorism in Islamabad

Chinese Foreign Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi, who is on an official visit to Pakistan, met the Chief of the Staff of the Army Asim Munir on Friday in Islamabad, the media wing announced on Friday.

“Discussions have focused on regional security, the fight against terrorism and questions of mutual interest,” said inter-service public relations in a statement.

He said the two parties reaffirmed their determination to strengthen the strategic partnership in all times and to improve coordination during regional and international forums.

FM Wang Yi reiterated Firm support from China to Sovereignty and Development of Pakistan, while the COs expressed their gratitude for the coherent support of Beijing, added the press release.

“The meeting ended with a common commitment to advance peace, stability and prosperity in the region.”

The meeting occurred one day after the Chinese FM had meetings with senior Pakistani officials, notably the Prime Minister, the President and the Deputy Prime Minister.

One day earlier, the Chinese FM organized a strategic dialogue with its ISHAQ DAR Pakistani counterpart in which the two countries have reaffirmed their unshakable commitment to high-quality development of improved Chinese-Pakistani economic corridor (CPEC).

During the meeting, the two parties examined the entire range of Pakistani-Chinese relations and discussed important regional and global questions. They also exchanged in -depth opinions on several facets of bilateral cooperation, including CPEC 2.0, trade and economic relations, multilateral cooperation and links of populations.

Addressing the installation of the common press alongside the Chinese FM YI, the Prime Minister and the Senator FM DAR stressed that the two countries benefit from a complete unanimity and a consensus on all the main bilateral, regional and global questions.

“We are encouraged by Yi’s vision to advance our bilateral cooperation, in particular the upgrading of the CPEC at its next phase,” noted Dar.

The Chinese FM Wang described CPEC as the cornerstone of the Pakistani-Chinese strategic partnership, declaring that the current priority is to advance the high quality development of the corridor.

He said that during the 6th strategic dialogues, the two parties had agreed to upgrade the CPEC in “a growth corridor, an improvement corridor for livelihoods, a green corridor and an open corridor”.

“We will work hard to deepen our industrial agriculture and mine cooperation in order to improve the well-being of the Pakistani people and accelerate the Pakistani ability for self-maintained development and increase economic resilience in Pakistan,” he said that China also supports the development and exploitation of the Gwadar port and promoted the KKH realignment project. In addition, the Chinese Foreign Minister also praised third party participation in the ML-1 project (Main Line Railway).
