Christy Goldsmith Romero, one of the four commissioners of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, will leave the federal regulator at the end of the month, she announced on Friday.
Goldsmith Romero joins his colleague Commissioner Summer Mersinger, who announced earlier this week that she would leave on May 30 after being appointed CEO of the Blockchain Association, a Lobbying group based in Washington, DC for cryptographic industry.
In a press release, Goldsmith Romero said that the derivative markets, that the agency oversees, “experienced significant growth while remaining resilient and financially stable through periods of stress and volatility of the market” during its stay at the Commission.
“I also wish to recognize the members of the CFTC technology advisory committee, which I have sponsored, for their historical reports and their public forums on finance issues,” she said. “… Under my sponsorship, TAC published Landmark reports on AI responsible for financial markets and decentralized finances, and sponsored public forums on AI, cybersecurity, blockchain, digital identity and digital assets.”
The acting president, Caroline Pham, should also leave soon, Coindesk reported earlier this week. Pham told people she left after former commissioner Brian Quintenz, the choice of President Donald Trump to lead the agency, is confirmed by the Senate.
Goldsmith Romero had previously announced his departure from the CFTC, also the attacker to the Quintenz confirmation. However, the senatorial committee of agriculture has not yet provided a confirmation hearing for Quintenz. After this hearing, the committee should plan a vote. Quintenz should then be confirmed by the majority of the complete Senate, and it is only then that it would be sworn.
The departure of Goldsmith Romero on May 31 will leave the CFTC with only two commissioners, and this number will probably remain static after the confirmation of Quintenz until Trump appoints up to three other commissioners (two Republicans and a Democrat) to fill empty seats.
