City rests youths killed in Iranian port strike

KARACHI:

A young Karachi resident, Yasir Khan, who was killed in Israeli and US missile strikes on the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, was laid to rest in Mauripur on Wednesday evening, as grief and calls for restraint echoed across the city.

His body, brought to Karachi earlier, was shifted from the Edhi Foundation mortuary to his residence in Mauripur after a washing and wrapping ritual. Funeral prayers were offered after night prayers at a local Eidgah, in the presence of family members, relatives, political figures and residents of the area.

Those present included MP Qadir Patel, MP Asif Khan and Monem Zafar Khan of Jamaat-e-Islami. The deceased was later buried at Manora Cemetery, with prayers offered for his forgiveness.

Sindh Governor Nihal Hashmi had earlier visited the mortuary to receive the body and offer condolences on behalf of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, assuring the family of the government’s full support.

Speaking to the media, Patel described Yasir as a martyr who “sacrificed his life and made Pakistan proud”, pointing out that he had left for Iran nine months ago in search of a job.

He stressed that further loss of innocent lives must be avoided and called for resolving the conflict through diplomacy, expressing hope in Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts.

Yasir’s father thanked officials, including the chief ministers of Sindh and Balochistan, as well as Patel, for their help in repatriating his son’s body. However, he called on the Sindh government to support Yasir’s widow and child, whose lives he said were deeply affected by the tragedy.

Meanwhile, three other youths from Karachi injured in the same attack remained in Taftan due to incomplete documents and were expected to return once the formalities were completed.

JI leaders strongly condemned the strikes, urging the international community to take note and calling for dialogue to end the conflict. They also questioned global institutions about their silence.

Yasir’s coffin was draped in the national flag and he was buried with full honors, remembering him by many as a victim of a distant conflict that left a deep impact on his country.
