New York: Naomi Osaka produced a dominant performance to eliminate the third seeded Coco Gauff 6-3 6-2 in a highly anticipated force test of the fourth round between two former US Open US champions on Monday.
The quadruple champion of the Grand Chelem Osaka showed lightning of her former shine while she took control of the match from the start, while the 2023 Gauff champion fought with her forehand and served.
The result transported Osaka to the quarterfinals Flushing Meadows for the first time in five years and she will then play the 11th Czech seeded Karolina Muchova or the 27th head of Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine.
The confrontation on Monday has marked the first time that the two favorites of the fans met in New York since their memorable clash of 2019, when Gauff, 15, lost against Osaka.
