Coinbase users (Coin) have lost more than $ 65 million against social engineering attacks in the past two months, with around $ 300 million lost for such attacks per year, a Crypto detective said on Monday on Monday Zachxbt in a post.
The real lost figure can be higher, because the amount does not include uncompvious cases, said Zachxbt.
Coinbase did not publicly comment on the question and did not answer a request for comments from Coindesk before the publication.
Scholars use stolen personal data to deceive users by sending false emails that imitate official Coinbase communications, including false cases ID encouraging users to transfer funds to portfolios controlled by crook, said ZachxBt .
“The crooks clone the Coinbase site almost 1: 1 and allow the crooks to send different invites to the target via e-mails usurped using panels,” he noted. “The two main groups that lead these scams are the skates of the actors com and threatened in India, both targeting American customers.”
“A Coinbase employee told people on X to stop using VPNs to avoid being reported as a suspect. Meanwhile, threat actors will explicitly block VPN of phishing sites, “said Zachxbt in the now viral position. “This shows the Coinbase failure to diagnose the real problem.”
Zachxbt has advised Coinbase to improve security by creating optional telephone number, by creating a limited account type for new users and improving community education on the prevention of scam.
