- A new rumor indicates to Nvidia working on RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Super GPUS
- The RTX 5080 Super rumor could use 24 GB of GDDR7 VRAM
- It has the potential to fill the gap with the RTX 4090
Nvidia seems to be set to complete its RTX 5000 office range with the RTX 5060 (and perhaps the RTX 5050, rumor. However, it may not be the last that we see of the Blackwell GPU range, with a new rumor alluding to another powerful card in the Team Green pipeline.
According to rumors in the chiphell forums, Nvidia is preparing an RTX 5070 Super and, in particular, an RTX 5080 Super which will suppose supposedly 24 GB of GDDR7 VRAM. This is a step compared to the current RTX 5080 model and its predecessor, the RTX 4080 Super, which both use 16 GB of VRAM.
It may be useful to note that MSI has previously teased an RTX 5080 GPPU not super -super using 24 GB of GDDR7 VRAM: it is not clear if Nvidia plans to upgrade simply VRAM or to publish a new super model – anyway, it brings this new rumor more credibility.
This alleged VRAM upgrade could see the super correspondence RTX 5080 not confirmed to the memory capacity of the RTX 4090, but use GDDR7 instead of GDDR6X VRAM. The alleged GPU will use more than probably the DI GB203, which is less than the AD102 matrix of the RTX 4090 (although it is older, the RTX 4090 always surpasses the RTX 5080).
The question is 24 GB of GDDR7 TRAM sufficient to fill the gap, or perhaps even surpass the flagship GPU of the previous generation? One thing is certain: the rumor GPU would certainly benefit from the memory bump, given the growing number of triple-a games which require more VRAM.
Even if it corresponds or outperform the RTX 4090, this will probably not be important due to the state of the GPU market
Not only is it difficult for me to predict an RTX 5080 Super GPU potential by dethroning the RTX 4090 power, but this GPU market is a horror, and I am ready to bet that very few players will pay.
Unless Nvidia makes this RTX 5080 super cheaper RTX 5080 than the non -subuper counterpart (similar to the lower price launch of the RTX 4080 Super compared to the original RTX 4080), I think it will be a difficult sale – especially if it doesn’t Make the performance of the RTX 4090 match.
And that excludes the harsh reality of the market: even if Team Green made it a cheaper and more powerful card, the GPU market trend tells me that it would probably cost more than RTX 4090. Keep in mind that third-party models of RTX 4090 are still constantly sold above the launch price, almost three whole years since release.
I hope that I am wrong, but if this rumor is legitimate, I believe that we will only see a slight upgrade in terms of performance corresponding to the RTX 4090 rather than an equal footing or a dethronement. Anyway, we will probably see owners of RTX 5080 upset in the near future …
