KARACHI:
The Senior Civil Judge South has ordered the garbage collection truck company and one of their drivers to pay Rs 42.7 million in compensation to the family of a man who was run over by a garbage collection vehicle.
Announcing the verdict, eight years after the accident, the court ordered the defendants to pay the compensation to the plaintiffs within one month.
The court held the truck’s owners, Nisar Jan and Co and driver Daniel Masih, responsible for the accident. Four other defendants were acquitted in the case. The defendants had not raised any objection to the claim for compensation.

It may be recalled that victim Umar Yaseen Ansari and his friend Ghiyasuddin were riding a motorcycle in north Karachi when a garbage truck hit their bike from behind in 2017. Umar died on the spot while his friend was injured.
Medical documents and other evidence were presented in court, confirming the cause of the accident and the motorcyclist’s death as cardio-respiratory failure due to head trauma.
The family of the deceased had filed a suit against six parties, including the trucking company, the Clifton Cantonment Board, a private bank as lessor and the truck driver.
The defendants argued that a sessions court acquitted them in the related criminal case, saying no such accident occurred involving their truck.
