Customs defend imports of luxury cars, denies money laundering complaints

Karachi:

Customs officials repel against allegations of money laundering and subinvolution in the post-compensation audit of imports of luxury vehicles, the chief collector of customs Jamil Nasir saying that these claims are currently not founded.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday with the collector East Tayyaba Kayani and the collector West Shafiq, Nasir said that luxury cars are erased in accordance with the established procedure that existed before the implementation of the new facial without facial assessment.

Nasir explained that an audit report after the accounting on the issue had not yet been received. He said that any analysis of the situation will only be provided after the report.

The chief collector has acknowledged that the audit process after the accounting is currently low and is hampered by a staff shortage, highlighting the need to strengthen it.

Clarifying more the regulations concerning car imports, Nasir noted that order 2022 of the import police prohibits the import of vintage and second -hand cars on a commercial basis. The only exception concerns Pakistanis abroad, which are allowed to import vehicles into specific programs, such as personal, luggage and gift regimes.

These imports are always subject to the payment of all applicable rights and taxes, which must be paid from the importer’s bank account. He said the objective of reforms was to improve the facilitation of stakeholders.

Nasir has detailed that the central evaluation unit is now operational in two quarters of work, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. These reforms have already led to a faster freight authorization in the ports, the facialless evaluation system is now going between 1,500 and 2,000 goods declarations (GDS) per day.

The central examination unit has also started to operate, with efforts to minimize delays. A virtual hearing system has been introduced to save time, allowing people to participate without having to appear in person.

According to the chief collector, these reforms are now evolving towards a stability phase and laboratory samples are also provided in the day.
