Washington commanders officially received the final approval of the DC council to start building a new stadium on the RFK stadium website.
It was a long process to reach this point, but the DC council voted 11-2 on Wednesday to approve the stage project of 3.8 billion dollars.
In turn, commanders will finally return to DC after playing almost 30 years in Landover, Maryland, to what is now the Northwest Stadium.

“Today is a historic day for DC, the organization of commanders and our fans,” said the owner of commanders Josh Harris in a press release published on social networks. “With the approval of the Council, we can now move forward on the RFK Transformer project which will bring sustainable economic growth for our city. This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication of Mayor Bowser, President Mendelson, Council and Community, commercial and work companies whose voices and contributions have contributed to shaping the process at each stage of the path.”

The commanders had expressed their concern about the vote after “new last -minute requests” of the DC council, according to a letter from the president of the Mark Clouse team. However, most of the proposed changes were rejected during the Wednesday session.

The continuation of the commanders to play on the old site of the RFK stadium took a step in front of the major month when the DC council initially approved the bill by a vote of 9-3. Harris and his owner group had examined several sites in Washington, Maryland and Virginia before continuing the location of RFK. The city took control of the field earlier this year after the congress adopted legislation signed by the president of the time, Joe Biden, in January.

In April, Harris, Bowser and the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced an agreement with DC officials on the RFK stadium website. They also met President Donald Trump in the oval office for a celebration. The redevelopment project of $ 3.8 billion includes 6,000 dwellings, retail spaces and a park in addition to the new place.
However, the process struck a hook in July when Trump opposed the team’s refusal to return to his former Redskins name.

Harris has been firm saying that the name of the team will remain in the future.
The RFK Stadium, named after Robert F. Kennedy, closed in September 2019 after having opened its doors in October 1961. It housed the Washington senators from MLB from 1962 to 1971 and DC of MLS from 1996 to 2017, among other teams.
