DD Lewis, a former Dallas Cowboys secondary who was part of the team for his two Super Bowl championship seasons in 1971 and 1977, died, the team announced. He was 79 years old.
Lewis was a life sentenced to cowboys – having been selected by the team to the sixth round of the 1968 draft of the state of the Mississippi and staying with the team throughout the 1981 season. He played 27 eliminatory games for Dallas, which is the franchise record.

“We mourn the death of the legend of Bulldog DD Lewis,” said the state of Mississippi in an article on social networks. “A star of the Sec and a defensive player of the year of the dry of 1967, he played 13 years with the Cowboys of Dallas, appeared in five Super Bowls, won two and was induced in the temple of renowned university football in 2001.”
Lewis was described as “one of the most underestimated players in the history of the franchise” in his NECRology on the Cowboys website. He was mainly relegated to a role of safeguarding on the defense of Chuck Howley until the 1973 season, when he had two recovery escaped during the year.
He became one of Tom Landry’s best “Doomsday Defense” secondary seconds next to Lee Roy Jordan. He quickly turned into an impact player. In the Super Bowl XII, he had a bag in the 27-10 victory against Denver’s broncos.

Lewis was also known for his famous quote during the description of Texas Stadium in 1982. It may be one of the best quotes leaving the franchise, competing with Jimmy Johnson, “How the Cowboys?”
“Texas Stadium has a hole in his roof so that God can watch his favorite team play,” said Lewis.
He was never a professional launcher or an All-Pro selection, but was appointed to Siler’s birthday team of Cowboys in 1984.

Lewis played in 186 games and was credited with 15.5 bags.
