Deadly tornado outbreak leaves 2 dead, traces of destruction in Illinois and Indiana

A powerful storm system spawned a series of suspected tornadoes in Illinois and Indiana on Tuesday, March 10.

The extreme weather conditions caused at least two deaths and extensive damage.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is investigating reports of at least four tornadoes striking the area.

Hardest hit was the Lake Village, Indiana area, where an elderly couple was killed when a tornado struck their home in the 8000 block of 600 W.

Authorities confirmed that several people were seriously injured, although the number was less than 10.

The tornado left a trail of destruction about 3.5 miles long through the city, trapping people in damaged homes, toppling trees and power lines and leaving livestock running free.

A search of the grid was conducted by first responders, including four firefighters, who found their homes badly damaged.

In Illinois, the town of Kankakee was hit hardest. Mayor Christopher Curtis reported seven people were injured.

The most damaged area was along Sandbar Road in Aroma Park, where a two-story barn was razed and a concrete silo was destroyed.

Heavy hail was also reported in the area. According to the NWS, hail with a diameter of approximately six inches fell in Kankakee, potentially setting a new state record.
