- A special committee within the US Congress concluded that Deepseek AI represents a deep threat to American national security
- The report reveals confidentiality and data security problems, the use of follow -up tools and even links with the Chinese army, among others
- Deepseek AI has been under fire since its release in January, many countries have issued surveys or prohibitions for reasons of confidentiality
Although it appears as another AI chatbot, Deepseek represents a deep threat to American national security. This is the verdict of the last report of the American Congress on the Chinese AI tool, which has sent shock waves in the IA world since its release last January.
Above all, the Special Committee within the American Congress has found problems of confidentiality and security with the way in which the chatbot managed the data of the Americans, the use of monitoring tools in its system, the spread of Chinese propaganda and even links with the Chinese army, among others.
The results came while Deepseek is under fire in many countries, included the United States, which has launched surveys or bans applied on Chinese software for reasons of confidentiality and security.
The risk of American data
“Deepseek represents a deep threat to the security of our country,” reads the American Congress report. “A more in -depth inspection reveals that the application siphon data to the People’s Republic of China (PRC), creates security vulnerabilities for its users and is based on a model that secretly censures and manipulates information in accordance with Chinese law.”
According to the company’s privacy policy, Deepseek collects a large amount of user data, including chat history, the details of the devices and even the way a person type, “notes experts.
It should be noted that invasive data collection practices are not a prerogative of the Chinese chatbot. For example, research carried out by one of the best VPN suppliers, Surfshark, noted that Google Gemini collects even more of your personal data.
However, the problem here for Americans’s data is that these details are strengthened towards the People’s Republic of China (RPC) via an infrastructure insecure to a Chinese telecommunications company that has links with the Chinese army – China Mobile.
In 2019, the Federal Commission Commission (FCC) prohibited China Mobile from operating in the United States. The company was officially appointed a national security threat three years later.
The report confirms what Feroot Security experts also discovered in February: hard -coded links on the Deepseek web connection page which connect it directly to China Mobile.
“Although the extent of data transmission remains unconfirmed, the integration of Deepseek with the mobile infrastructure of China raises serious concerns concerning the potential foreign access to the private information of the Americans,” said the report.
Surveys have also revealed that Deepseek incorporates monitoring tools for Chinese technology giants that the US government had previously reported security problems, including the parent company of Tiktok, Bytedance, Baidu and Tencent.
“Together, these companies constitute a well -documented system for monitoring, censorship and data exploitation, which Deepseek strengthens,” wrote experts.
Worse, researchers have discovered that Deepseek does not do much to protect the information it collects.
“For these reasons, it is obvious that the Deepseek website and the application act as a direct channel for the collection of foreign information on private data of the Americans.”
The allegations concerning the spread of Chinese propaganda, censorship, the unauthorized use of American AI models and the illegal use of limited Nvidia chips have also been raised.
The Committee now recommends extending export controls and responding to the risks of Chinese AI models, while preparing a strategic surprise related to advanced AI.
