- Deezer’s Flow Tuner has just received a big update
- You can now ban or encourage certain genres based on what you like
- The AI slope is also omitted
Recently, I’ve had a big problem with Spotify: algorithmically generated playlists insist on inserting random pop artists into my totally non-pop playlists. Sorry, Spotify, but Chappell Roan and Olivia Dean aren’t ’90s folk rock.
So, is Deezer coming to the rescue?
The French music streaming service (a French subscription platform, not just for Guetta and Daft Punk) is rolling out an upgrade to its Flow Tuner feature, which creates a personalized playlist based on your listening.
Now you can push Flow Tuner in the right direction, which should help you adjust the playlist generator in the right direction. The bottom line is that you can now turn off certain genres or subgenres, prohibiting Flow from adding them to the playlist – and you can turn them back on later, if you decide your metal embargo is over.
You can also add genres you’ve never listened to before, if you want to discover something new. The Flow playlist will immediately reflect your changes.
Another stop on the road
Many streaming services give you the illusion of power over your algorithmically created playlists. Apple Music lets you listen less often to songs that you would like to hear less often, but in reality do with this information, no one can guess. Spotify allows you to exclude songs from your “taste profile”, although this appears to only remove one song, and only from “made for you” lists.
Deezer’s Flow Tuner therefore gives you much more control over the playlists offered to you. If you like using these features to discover new music, this will be a nice little change – and you’ll avoid lumping Roan or Dean in with 90s rock.
Using the feature is simple: when you create a Flow, the app will automatically ask you which genres to include (or not). The tool appears to have a number of subgenres, so you should be able to curate the playlist as you wish, despite the freedom from genre labels.
We consider Deezer to be the best music streaming service in terms of features, with quizzes, collaborative playlist creation tools, and music recognition tools that you don’t get from its competitors. This new change to Flow Tuner appears to be the next step among many, aimed at making the algorithmically generated playlist tool world-class.
Concrete example? AI-generated tracks are banned from Flow Tuner, with Deezer’s tools automatically excluding them. Less slop, more rock? This has to be the most tempting reason to leave Spotify that I’ve heard in a while…
