Ousmane Dembele was appointed the best player in the world of the season when he claimed the Ballon d’Or a night of Triomphe for his Paris St Germain club, while Aitana Bonmati de Barcelona, winner of the trophy in series, won the female prize on Monday.
The 28 -year -old French striker Dembele, who needed time and advice from PSG coach, Luis Enrique, to achieve his potential when he inspired the Capital Club in his first title of Champions League last season, became the sixth French player to raise the prize and the first from Karim Benzema in 2022.
He beat Spain and the Barcelona Lamine Yamal striker, with his PSG teammate, Vitinha, taking third place.
“What I have just experienced is exceptional, I have no words for that, what happened with PSG. I feel a little stress, it is not easy to win this trophy, and to have it presented by Ronaldinho, a legend of football, is exceptional,” said Debele on stage during a Paris ceremony where he was supported by several teammates, the others being in Marseille.
“I would like to thank PSG that came to get me in 2023. It is an incredible family. President Nasser (Al-Khelaifi) is like a father for me. I also want to thank all the staff and the coach, who was exceptional with me – he too is like a father – and all my teammates.
“We have practically won everything together. You supported me in the right one and in difficult times. This individual trophy is the one that the team won collectively,” he added, later melted when he thanked his mother who joined him on stage.
He also mentioned his first Stade Rennais club and the national team, promising to win another World Cup next year with coach Didier Deschamps after their victory in 2018.
“A beautiful evening for him and a very good thing for French football. Oous is someone who is very sensitive, he has had a difficult career with serious injuries, but he has always kept things in perspective,” said Deschamps.
The Dembele Prize was one of the many for PSG, which won the triple from the Champions League, Ligue 1 and the French Cup last season as well as the UEFA Super Cup this year.
The French champions were appointed team of the season, Luis Enrique was elected the best coach and Gianluigi Donnarumma, who left for Manchester City in the tight season, was recognized as a goalkeeper of the first goal with the Yashin trophy.
“This is the result of hard work, by all at the club,” said PSG president Al-Khelaifi. “We have young players and stars who work for the team. It is a collective success.”
Spain Bonmati, the player of the Champions League season, won the female Ballon d’Or or for the third consecutive time, while the Dutch manager of England Sarina Wiegman was honored as a female trainer of the year after having conducted his team in the European title.
“I am amazed and proud because it is a lot of hard work. I am here for the third consecutive time because of the teams with which I played,” said Bonmati, 27.
“We could not win the Champions League this year, but we went to the final and it is football, it is not always a question of winning or losing,” she added, Barça having lost 1-0 against Arsenal during the final of the Elite Club club this year.
