Failure to implement the National Action Plan agreed by all political parties is causing an upsurge in terrorism, ISPR Director General Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said on Friday at a press conference in Peshawar on the security situation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
KP has been at the forefront of Pakistan’s anti-terrorism campaign for two decades, DG ISPR said. When the frequency of terrorist incidents increased again in 2021, security forces responded “firmly and effectively”, he said. More Khwarij have been killed in the recent past than in the last nine years combined, Lt Gen Chaudhry added.
Fitna al-Khwarij is a term the state coined to refer to terrorists affiliated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) after the war with India in May this year.
A total of 14,534 operations were carried out across KP in 2024, he said. During these operations, 917 members of the security forces were martyred and 516 civilians were killed.
He began the press conference, broadcast live on YouTube, paying tribute to the “brave and resilient people” of KP, recognizing their sacrifices alongside the armed forces in the fight against terrorism.
