- Apple pays $ 95 million to set a Siri pursuit
- If you think you are eligible, you must submit a complaint by July 2
- Apple denied all of the reprehensible acts in the rules of the case
In January, Apple agreed to set a collective appeal linked to its vocal assistant Siri. The case saw some owners of Apple devices say that Siri had disclosed their private conversations to advertisers, following “Siri involuntary activations”.
Apple has denied all the reprehensible acts and agreed to settle the case to “avoid additional disputes” (more on this subject below). But the result of the “Lopez vs Apple Inc” costume means that if you have and use an Apple device between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024, you could be due to a small payment tranche.
Those who are eligible could be a line for a maximum payment of $ 100 ($ 20 per device, for up to five SIRI devices). Not exactly a lottery jackpot, but which is worth being studied if you think you were affected by Siri’s involuntary activation during a private conversation during this period.
As reported by Le Verge, many of the people concerned will have received an email entitled “Lopez Voice Assistant Class Rettlement” Settlement “(from the address” info@lopezvoiceasters andrtically.com “). Despite the ring like spam, it is a real email containing details such as your “applicant identification code” and more.
But even if you have not received this, you can also submit a complaint. Here is a quick ventilation of what happened, of Apple’s response and how to submit a complaint if you think you have been assigned …
What happened?
The complainants of the trial allegedly alleged that “confidential or private communications” were “obtained by Apple and / or shared with third parties following an involuntary activation of Siri”. According to the costume home page, this took place between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024.
But how? Apple has always argued that iPhones do not listen to their owners, apart from the moment when words of alarm clock like “Hey, Siri” are used. Well, the key is this sentence “involuntary activation of Siri”.
The complainants say that Siri has not only listened to private conversations by mistake – perhaps by undressing a word of awakening – but also used this information to then trigger advertisements.
Again, Apple denies that this is possible, declaring that “Siri data have never been used to build marketing profiles and that it has never been sold to anyone for no end”.
Nevertheless, as PK Press Club reported, two complainants said that their mentions on Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden restaurants allowed them to obtain advertisements for these products, while another applicant said they received advertisements for brand surgical treatment after talking about it with their doctor.
What Apple said?
Although he agrees to pay $ 95 million to settle the Siri trial, Apple was quite optimistic in its response – and did not admit any reprehensible act, despite the pursuit regulations.
Apple told us that “SIRI data have never been used to build marketing profiles and that it has never been sold to anyone at any end”, adding that the data collected is used only to improve the virtual assistant.
In a separate declaration, he added: “Apple settled this case to avoid additional disputes so that we can pass concerns concerning the rating of third parties that we have already approached in 2019. We use Siri data to improve Siri, and we constantly develop technologies to make Siri even more private.”
It is then quite categorical, but the regulation means that potentially millions of owners of Apple devices could be eligible for a complaint – here is how to check if you are one of them.
How to claim
If you think you are eligible for a payment in the “Lopez against Apple Inc” trial, you will have to use the official complaint form and submit it by July 2, 2025.
You will have to meet fairly specific criteria in order to be eligible for payment. These criteria are below and the complaint form asks you to confirm all of the above: oath:
- Between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024, you bought or possessed an Siri device in the United States and activated Siri on this device
- You experienced “involuntary Siri activation” during this period
- This involuntary activation of Siri took place “during a conversation intended to be confidential and private”
You can make complaints for up to five SIRI devices – these may include iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, Imacs, Homepods, Ipod Touch or Apple TV.
As mentioned above, many of those who are potentially eligible have received an email entitled “Settlement of collective appeal Lopez Voice Assistant”. But you do not necessarily need to have received this email to make a complaint – if not, simply click on “new complaint” in the complaint form and enter your contact details from there.
