- Included Rançon recently added a dollar tree to its data leak site
- Dollar Tree replied by saying that the data belonged to 99 cents only
- 99 cents only is a reduced price retailer who declared bankruptcy in 2024
The pirates claim to have violated a dollar tree and stole his sensitive files, but the retail giant of discounts says that he has never been attacking, and the data signaling around the dark net does not belong to him.
A ransomware operation known as the Rançon Inc recently added a dollar tree to its data leakage page, saying that it stole 1.2 teraoctes of sensitive and personal data, threatening to release it unless a ransom is paid. The group provided a sample of the stolen data, including passport scans, and also cited a shade press release in which it announced the acquisition of 99 cents only.
And there is the friction – Dollar Tree says that the data in fact belongs to 99 cents only – a shopping chain at a completely different reduced price.
99 cents only the data has not been acquired
99 cents declared bankruptcy in April 2024, citing the economic stress of inflation, pandemic effects, flight / withdrawal and rigid competition. He closed the 371 stores by mid-2024 after the liquidation, and Dollar Tree acquired rights at 170 former leases, as well as its North American intellectual property and certain store equipment.
Dollar Tree reused many of these leases and opened it as its own stores later that year.
A spokesperson for the reduced price retailer said he was aware of data theft complaints, but stressed that it was only 99 cents of the stores that were affected.
“The files referenced in these complaints seem to involve former employees of 99 cents only,” said the spokesperson. “The involvement of Dollar Tree with 99 cents only stores is linked to the purchase of selected real estate lease rights.”
“We have not acquired their business entity, their systems / networks or their data. Any allegation of the involvement of Dollar Tree is inaccurate. ”
Since 99 cents stop only, his emails and phone numbers have disappeared, which makes it impossible to request a declaration or a comment. Dollar Tree, on the other hand, is one of the most prosperous companies in its industry, with more than $ 17.6 billion in sales last year.
