- The latest beta version of iOS 26.4 is available for download
- Apple says it offers “improved keyboard precision when typing quickly”
- But it seems that not all keyboard bugs have been fixed
Typing on your iPhone’s keyboard can sometimes be an exercise in frustration: between misspelled words and overzealous autocorrect interventions, typing what you want is sometimes more difficult than it should be. That’s why an apparent bug in iOS 26 has caused such consternation among Apple fans in recent weeks, but it appears a fix is on the way in iOS 26.4.
The problem in question concerned the so-called “missing characters”. Many users have found that iOS sometimes ignores typed characters when users type very quickly. This would force people to pause and then try the button again, slowing them down. Or, the missing characters would cause autocorrect to misinterpret the entered word, changing it to something the user hadn’t intended.
Apple seems to have fixed this irritating issue in the latest iOS 26.4 beta. In its release notes accompanying the update, Apple said the new version offers “improved keyboard precision when typing quickly.” But as I discovered, it might not have been able to eliminate all of iOS 26’s typing-related flaws.

An imperfect solution?
Hopefully, the iOS 26.4 update should resolve the missing characters issue. If you’ve experienced this while typing messages to friends and family, you may find that Apple has finally sorted things out.
However, I tested iOS 26.4 and noticed that an infuriating bug related to the emoji button – whereby the emoji key is not recognized if you type quickly – seems to still be in place. This issue has been highlighted on social media, where Reddit user crazyserb89, for example, said the issue is “driving me crazy.”
In my experience, tapping the emoji button in the middle of a quick series of letters instead activated the 123/ABC button above it. Only when I paused my typing did the emoji control work properly.
While anecdotal, this suggests that the iOS 26.4 update hasn’t entirely fixed the typing experience for Apple fans. Hopefully Apple can fix this in a future update.
If you want to download iOS 26.4, you need to be enrolled in the iOS 26 public beta. Once that’s set, open the Settings app and go to General > Software Update, wait for the download to appear, then tap Update Now. Make sure you have backed up your iPhone before starting in case something goes wrong.
