Dyson spoils us. Towards the end of last year, the brand launched a new ultra-compact vacuum cleaner, the PencilVac, and a new nimble hard floor cleaner, the Clean+Wash Hygiene. It now combines the best features of both cleaners to create the Dyson PencilWash.
This new hard floor cleaner features the simplified construction and shrunken motor of the PencilVac, and is inspired by Clean+Wash Hygiene efficiency. Here’s a look at the coolest features of this innovative new cleaner…
1. It’s so compact
The (baby) elephant in the room is size. Most of today’s best wet and dry vacuums are big and heavy, but the PencilWash is almost impossibly slim. It uses a small motor, small enough to fit in the 1.5 inch/38 mm handle. The battery is also compact and clips together to form the top of the handle. The water tanks are then integrated into the floor head.
This means the set isn’t much bigger than a full-sized broom. It’s also lightweight, at 4.9 lbs / 2.2 kg. Now, designing the water tanks to fit into the floor head means they’re quite small, but thanks to meticulous water distribution, Dyson says they should allow up to 100 square meters of cleaning per tank.
2. There is no filter
The knock-on effect of the waste water tank placed inside the floor head is that the dirty liquid hardly needs to move. Thus, there is no risk of a tube becoming clogged or starting to emit unpleasant odors. In fact, Dyson boasts that there are no filters here.
3. It’s extremely maneuverable
In addition to having a sleek design, the PencilWash is designed to be handy. This is an area where Dyson excels: most of today’s best Dyson vacuum cleaners are ultra-manageable. This one also benefits from that broomstick handle, meaning there’s no bulk around the top section either.
Dyson says the PencilWash will rotate smoothly with a simple turn of the wrist, and based on my experience with the PencilVac, I can believe it. It can also fall almost flat (170 degrees), in which mode it measures just 5.9 inches/15 cm high, and can slide under low furniture with ease.
The Dyson PencilWash goes on sale in the US on March 17 and in the UK on February 23, with a list price of $349/£299.99. (Availability and price in Australia to be confirmed). Full review to follow.
