Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni fought back by scoring two points late against the Washington Commanders with about 4:30 left in Saturday’s game.

Eagles running back Saquon Barkley kicked the ball for the conversion, giving Philadelphia a 19-point lead. Philadelphia won 29-18. The move sparked a huge brawl that resulted in the ejection of Commanders defenders Javon Kinlaw and Quan Martin, as well as Eagles offensive lineman Tyler Steen.

Sirianni said he wasn’t going to run up the score – the decision was more about being comfortable with a 19-point lead instead of 18.

“We wanted to be sure to go up in that direction, just in case. That’s what our calculations told us in this particular case,” Sirianni said. “It’s a division game. It’s always back and forth. … This is the team we played in the NFC championship game last year. I know how much they wanted to beat us.

“I know how much we wanted to beat them. We always have to keep our composure in times like that. But that’s NFC East football. … They have tough guys. We have tough guys.”

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn was not happy and noted that the two teams would meet again on January 4th.

“If that’s how they want to go down, it’s all good,” Quinn said. “We’ll see them again in two weeks.”

Commanders catcher Terry McLaurin said he understands why Sirianni decided to pick two.

“Eagles versus Commanders, man. That’s the way it goes. … There’s a lot of history, obviously. They were beating us. They’re not going to throw in the towel. They’re not going to take it easy on us. They wanted to bury us at 2. As a team, it’s not like you’re going to tell them, ‘Don’t go for 2.’ We have to stop them,” McLaurin said. “I don’t really hold any ill will for what they did, but you don’t want to see the match get out of hand and guys get hurt. That comes with this rivalry between us and them. I don’t think that will ever change, to be honest.”
