- The atmos of Google and Samsung, Eclipsa, arrives at LG and Google TVS
- The 3D audio format will also be cooked in Android 16
- No support for any streaming service except YouTube so far
Can there be a new 3D audio format in town, but when will the owners of television hear it?
While enlightened listeners can know their path around Dolby Atmos, DTS: X or even the upcoming AURO-3D format on Nvidia Shield, Eclipsa devices is a new open source 3D audio format developed by Google and Samsung.
Imagined as a competitor of Dolby Atmos – a bit like the way HDR10 + format of Samsung competes with Dolby Vision – Eclipsa was officially revealed to CES 2025 and confirmed to be launched in all TVs and bars of his Samsung 2025.
Addressing Flatpanelleshd, Google representatives have confirmed that Eclipsa will be cooked in the Android 16 operating system, which means that it will get support from Google TVS and other smartvisor manufacturers that use The Android operating system, such as Hisense, TCL, Sony and Philips TV. Beyond that, the objective is to operate Audio Eclipsa on mobile devices and web browsers, alongside AV receptors. Flatpanelleshd also reports that the support will arrive on webos, used on LG TV.
But the question remains: where and how will someone access the audio coded by Eclipsa?
The waiting game
Eclipsa is based on the channels, which means that it links sound sources to specific channels (as in a stereo or 5.1 configuration on surround) rather than individuals each sound source (as in the Dolby Atmos format based on objects). However, Eclipsa supports “ up to 28 entrance channels ” according to Flatpanelleshd, so there is more than enough information to create a convincing 3D sound space for listening at home. Although it exchanges a little flexibility and specificity of the location, it is also a little easier to deploy and recreate in a coherent manner.
Given Google’s participation, the Eclipsa audio is tilted as a versatile 3D audio format which can be deployed on its huge network of Android devices for any audio source, even Humdrum YouTube videos, rather than focusing mainly on The high -end entertainment release like films, television shows, music and games. YouTube creators can apparently download content coded by Eclipsa later in 2025.
In a blog article detailing the new format, Google says that “space audio technologies have been developed for the first time over 50 years ago, and reading has been available for consumers for more than a decade, but the Creation of space audio was mainly limited to film professionals or musical industries. This is why Google and Samsung publish Eclipsa Audio, an open source space audio format for everyone. “”
However, 3D audio formats in general to have been pushed on high -end television models and the main television streaming services, with interests motivated by moviegoers / audiophiles wishing to improve their theater experience at home with a more immersive sound. It is not clear either that the creators of YouTube will feel encouraged to start creating content in the new mass format.
As Flatpanelleshd notes, the atmosphere Netflix has not yet expressed its support, despite its involvement with Google and Samsung in the Open Media Alliance (AOM), and Google Reps could not comment on the Apple plans for its tvos or iOS platforms either.
The concept of open source 3D audio is very attractive, especially if it improves the type of audio everyday experienced via Android smartphones and tablets, or via the YouTube application. But it will be difficult to shout about Eclipsa until certain major players in the field – and creators of content in the field – actually decide to get involved. A format on the best televisions and the best bars of sound is not good if there is nothing to look at.
