At least eight people, including three women and several children, died when a passenger vehicle plunged into a ravine in the Lower Kohistan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Monday.
The incident occurred along the Karakoram road near the Mita Banda region, known for its treacherous and narrow roads. According to rescue managers, the vehicle was on the road from Rawalpindi to Gilgit when the driver lost control, which made him fall into a deep throat.
The rescue teams arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and launched a recovery operation. The authorities confirmed that the deceased included women and children. Local residents also helped in efforts to recover the victims.
The victims were identified as Asif Iqbal from Rawalpindi, his wife Memona Iqbal, their four children, and two parents – Aaisha Siddique and Bushra Waseem.
The district police officer (DPO), Taimur Khan, confirmed the deaths and noted that the accident had taken place on a particularly dangerous section of the motorway adjacent to the Indus river. “The eight bodies have been transferred to a nearby health establishment, from where they will be sent to Rawalpindi,” he told journalists.
DPO Khan urged drivers to show extreme caution when moving to the Kohistan region, citing difficult geography and road conditions that frequently contribute to such tragedies.
