ESPN host Stephen A. Smith delivered his verdict on the shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minnesota on Wednesday.
During an appearance on his podcast, Smith called the shooting “completely justified” from a legal standpoint, but he also believes the officer could have shot out the tires of the woman’s vehicle instead.
“I’ve seen the video numerous times and seeing what happened from a legal standpoint as far as a law enforcement officer is concerned, I don’t expect him to be prosecuted. He was completely justified,” Smith said.

“From a humanitarian point of view, though, why did you have to do that? If you could have gotten away, that means you could have shot the tires. That means you could have gotten a few feet away after you shot the tires. And if you hadn’t managed to do that, you could have pushed her down the road.
“You didn’t have to do that. She wasn’t driving down the road toward you at 90 miles an hour. She was parked in the middle of the street, and rather than get out of the car, she wrongly attempted to drive away and wrongly ignored a law enforcement official, which is exactly what ICE is, and, as a result, lost her life because of it.”

Good was driving a vehicle at the time of his death. The officers ordered her to exit the vehicle, but she refused and “attempted to run over and ram them with her vehicle,” according to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
“It was an act of domestic terrorism“, Noem said. “One of our officers acted quickly and defensively, fired to protect himself and those around him.”

The members of the Minneapolis City Council confirmed Good’s identity in a joint statement Wednesday, calling her a “member of our community” and demanding that ICE leave town.
The Department of Homeland Security reported in December that assaults and violent attacks against ICE law enforcement officers increased by more than 1,150% compared to attacks under the Biden administration. It found that there were 238 assaults on ICE agents between January 21, 2025 and November 21, 2025, compared to just 19 during the same period in 2024.
