Robert Redford is remembered for his pioneering efforts in building the famed Sundance Institute at his final gala.
Part of the Sundance Film Festival, the ceremony became notable as it was the first since the death of its famous founder in September last year.
To begin, Ethan Hawke said: “Once upon a time there was an extraordinary man who connected us all in this room. »
“We would not be here without the love and appreciation of Robert Redford,” he said.

When Hawke was unsuccessful in getting the film, directed by Redford, the filmmaker told him, “You’re too young for this role. But I just want you to know that you’re going to have a wonderful career, and I can’t wait to see it.”
“He believed in me. He followed. He came to see me in a play. It was a 99-seat theater, $10 a ticket. What the hell is this?“, remembers the actor. “He defended others. The fact that he had time to care about all of us is so meaningful.
Chloe Zhao, currently touring the directing awards circuit Hamnetalso intervened to honor Redford’s memory.
Accepting the institute’s Trailblazer Award, the Chinese director highlighted “interdependence” and “community” as the most important aspects of “leadership” and being a pioneer.
“I want to thank Robert Redford for knowing the importance of the interconnectedness of nature and human nature,” she added.
Other stars gathered to honor the Sundance founder included his Indecent proposal his co-star Woody Harrelson, as well as directors Ava DuVernay and Taika Waititi.
Notably, this year is the last time Sundance will be celebrated in its longtime home, Park City.
Robert Redford’s daughter, Amy Redford, described the final evening as “coming home.” She added that she couldn’t “stop thinking about all the galas my dad had no interest in attending and how he could have actually enjoyed this one.”
