Ethan Hawke found filming ‘Blue Moon’ ‘challenging’ and ‘rewarding’

Ethan Hawke just admitted to the shooting Blue Moon was “enriching” but also difficult.

The 54-year-old actor worked with director Richard Linklater for the ninth time on the film, in which he plays iconic songwriter Lorenz Hart, and the filmmaker kept pushing the star to “disappear” into his character.

Ethan said Variety: “What Rick really wanted me to do was disappear. After one take, my way of critiquing, Rick would say, ‘I saw you.’ And every time he saw me, he would stop what I was doing. It was frustrating and difficult. And enriching. It’s almost like asking myself, “Can you build this cabinet with these five tools?” »

THE Childhood The star drew inspiration from his early days on the New York theater scene for this role, as he could see similarities between his character and his mentors from the time.

He said: “I got my education in theater from older gay men. They were intelligent men like Larry (Hart). He’s a writer and he loves life and he has demons and he’s in society at a time when being gay was more of an issue.

“I knew people like Larry Hart, with this extreme depth of feeling and perception and insight. They knew everything about acting, the same way monks treat the Bible,” Ethan added.

“And if you have a gay mentor, you know, at least support him, that he spent a lot of his life in the closet. I recognized that in Larry and it’s heartbreaking,” he said.

“But I also have that person in me. And Rick knew that. And I knew I was excited for this time at bat. It’s a role that’s out of my comfort zone, but I know the guy. I’ve played a lot of different characters, but in some ways, Larry is the one I care about the most,” Ethan Hawke concluded.
