The recent decision of the Colorado football program to withdraw n ° 12 by Travis Hunter and the n ° 2 jerseys of Sheduer Sanders were criticized. The two former Colorado players’ jerseys were officially removed earlier this month during a special ceremony at the Buffaloese spring game.
Only four other players in the history of Colorado football were honored via a jersey retreat. Colorado football dates back 135 years. The criteria applied to the respective pensions of Sanders and Hunter differ from what the other former players had to face.

In the 1990s, a student-athlete had to meet a requirement for graduation before a jersey retirement. A spokesperson for the athletics department confirmed to USA Today Sports that Sanders and Hunter had not yet graduated at the time of the retirement ceremony on April 19.

School officials also said that the graduation criterion was never an official policy, saying that it was previously the “preference of a university advisor”.

Officials added that the administration of the sports department, as well as the head coach, can make Jersey’s retirement decisions at their own discretion.
Michael Jones is one of the last former Colorado football players to express themselves as Fallout of the controversial Rage decision. Jones suggested that his former university did not purely have a jersey retirement process.

“For them, not having any processes for the retirement of a number is an asinin for an institution like Colorado,” Jones told USA Today Sports. “It’s just completely asinin.”
Darian Hagan, who played the quarter of a quarter in Colorado, told the point of sale that the controversial retirement decision had left him “stunned”. Hagan has not discredited the contributions of Sanders or Hunter in Colorado, but rather expressed his conviction that he should receive the honor “one day”.
“We have always been told that there was a waiting period,” Hagan told the point of sale. “There was a policy in place. He had to be voted. I was never told that it was at the discretion of the sports director or the head coach. It was a new shocking for me. It was difficult to stomach.”
Sanders and Hunter played their last match in a Colorado uniform at the end of December in the Alamo Bowl. Hunter was the second overall selection of the NFL 2025 draft. The unexpected drop in Sanders in last week’s draft was closely monitored in the world of sport and beyond. Sanders was finally selected in the fifth round and will start his career in the NFL with the Browns of Cleveland.
The Colorado won the national championship in 1990. Jones underlined the history of the program and suggested allowing Sanders and Hunter to effectively jump the pension line of the jersey contributed to “a serious erasure of our football heritage”, he wrote in an article on social media.
Elsewhere, Colorado has strict policies in place for its temple of renown of athletics.
If a player has to be deemed eligible, athletes must be at least 10 years of his player career in Boulder. The individual should also not participate in a professional sports league, by documentation on the appointment.
