The drama Khalil-Ur-Rehman Qamar which was making headlines for its controversial plot has finally come to an end. The show premiered its latest episode on ARY digital on Saturday and fans had many mixed responses.
An overwhelming majority were happy that the show was finally over. “Today is the best episode because it’s the last episode,” one YouTuber commenter wrote. “I think the writer should now stop working on these scripts. He (Khalil-Ur-Rehman) is only working on the dialogues and not the story.” While another claimed that music was the only redeeming factor, “the instrumental music of today was better than all the drama,” they wrote.
The drama was previously criticized for its depiction of a problematic love story between a teacher and a student. Public opinion had felt that Manto (Humayun Saeed) and Mehmal (Sajal Ali) should not be romantically involved with each other because of their imbalanced power dynamics and the respect that a teacher-student relationship demands.
Now that the series is coming to an end, many also had a problem with the ending. “I waited so long for this ending,” one wrote with a disappointed laugh. “Good luck, don’t do a drama like this again.” Another was just not impressed. “This drama has completely lost its charm,” they write. “The romance between Mehmal and Manto seems forced and awkward. Sajal’s character just seems uncomfortable and messy.”
On the other hand, fans of Miss Maria (Sanam Saeed) demanded justice for the character. “Manto should have been with Miss Maria,” they wrote. “They ended up showing a romance between teacher and student.” Another wanted to see the end of Miss Maria and Hazrat: “What is this? they wrote. “Miss Maria and Hazrat’s wedding should also have been shown. It’s an incomplete ending.”
However, fans made sure to acknowledge the good that the series had offered. “The drama should be awarded for best cinematography and best background score,” one user wrote. Another praised the writer’s decision to continue writing despite the controversies surrounding him. “Hail to the writer for going against the wishes of the audience,” they wrote. “It really takes courage to make such a difficult-to-understand masterpiece.”
The show was written by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar and directed by Nadeem Baig. It was distributed by Six Sigma Plus and Next Level Entertainment. The drama featured a star cast with Humayun and Sajal in the lead and Sanam Saeed, Asif Raza Mir, Saba Hamid, Saba Faisal, Saima Noor and Azaan Sami Khan in supporting roles.
