ISLAMABAD:
The new Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) has been listed to hear a petition seeking the formation of a judicial commission to investigate allegations of fraud in the February 2024 general election.
The country’s largest opposition party, PTI, had filed a petition in the Supreme Court soon after the general elections through Salman Akram Raja.
However, the FCC, created under the recently enacted 27th Constitutional Amendment, will now hear the case.
According to official sources, FCC Chief Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan has formed a larger five-member bench which will consider the plea tomorrow (Tuesday).
The bench headed by Justice Aamer Farooq includes Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, Justice KK Agha, Justice Rozi Khan Barrech and Justice Syed Arshad Hussain Shah.
The PTI was unable to participate in the February 8 general elections as a party due to a Supreme Court order that stripped the party of its electoral symbol.
However, party-backed independent candidates emerged as the largest group in the National Assembly. The party claimed the elections were massively rigged to prevent it from forming the government.
He then contacted the SC to ask it to form a judicial commission to investigate allegations of electoral fraud – an argument that the SC did not accept during the year and nine months that followed.
Several petitions have already been filed in different high courts challenging the 27th constitutional amendment.
