- Fitbit users have more time to switch to Google accounts
- The new deadline is May 19 (pushed back from February 2)
- Changing is quick and easy, via the Fitbit app
Shortly after Google purchased Fitbit in 2021, it became clear that Fitbit accounts would be swallowed up by Google accounts – but if you haven’t made the switch yet, Google is giving you a little more time to get there.
According to the official support page (via The Verge), the lights will go out for Fitbit accounts on May 19, 2026: after this date, your Fitbit account will no longer work with Fitbit devices. The deadline for uploading your data is a little later, July 15, 2026.
Previously, Google announced that Fitbit accounts will stop working on February 2, i.e. Monday. This itself was an expansion, as the original plan was to have everyone migrate to Google accounts sometime in 2025.
Google hasn’t explained why the deadline was extended, but there are likely either technical issues or a significant number of users who haven’t yet – and Google doesn’t want them to miss out.
How to change
When you transfer your Fitbit account information to a Google account of your choice, all your fitness data and stats will transfer and the app will remain the same. Basically, you just change the email address you use to log in.
If you’re not happy with Google having your health and fitness stats, you can export your Fitbit account data and then request to close your account. Any Fitbit accounts that have not been migrated by July 15 will be deleted by Google.
You can find complete instructions for transferring your Fitbit account to a Google account on the Google Support Center. Essentially, you can do this from the Settings page in the Fitbit app for Android or iOS and simply follow the on-screen prompts.
The process seems fairly painless and there haven’t been any widespread reports of users having difficulty switching from Fitbit to Google. The move certainly went smoother than the Gemini for Home upgrade currently being rolled out.
