At least five police officers were martyred after armed bandits from the Katcha region attacked a police checkpoint in Rahim Yar Khan, Punjab police announced on Friday.

About 40 bandits, armed with rocket launchers and grenades, attacked the Sheikhani police checkpoint, located between Mahi Chowk and Fentra Chowk near the Guddu-Kashmore road Thursday evening, according to IGP Punjab Dr Usman Anwar.

“The police of the elite force, namely Muhammad Irfan, Muhammad Saleem, Nukhail, the gendarme Khalil and Ghazanfar, were martyred,” the statement of his office said. The first three officers came from Bahawalnagar while the other two came from Rahim Yar Khan.

A bandit was also killed when the police retaliated, added the declaration. The attackers fled the site, but the police, led by DPO Irfan Ali Samo, sealed all the entry -level points to the region.
