Rahim Yar Khan: At least five police officers were martyred and two more injured when armed bandits attacked a police check in the Rahim Yar Khan district at Punjab on Thursday evening.
A police official said that highly armed Dacoits aimed at the Shekhani checkpoint, the martyring of five elite force staff and the injuries of two other cops.
During an exchange of fire, a Dacit was also killed, said the spokesperson.
Martyrs’ cops have been identified as Muhammad Irfan, Muhammad Saleem, Muhammad Khalil, Nakheel and Ghazanfar Abbas.
Two of the police killed belonged to Rahim Yar Khan, while the remaining three were from the Bahawalnagar district.
Taking a strict opinion of the incident, the inspector general of the Punjab of the police (IGP), Dr. Usman Anwar, summoned a report by the regional police officer (RPO) Bahawalpur and published strict instructions at DPO Rahim Yar Khan to stop the culprits involved in the attack on the staff of the elite force in the region of Katcha.
Counting tribute to the officers killed, Dr. Anwar said that their sacrifice would not be forgotten and described their martyrdom as a brand of “great courage and duty”.
“Bandits launched a loose attack in the middle of the night,” he said, adding that such cowardly acts could not shake the morale of the police forces.
The Punjab police chief said the police operation against river criminal groups would continue with full force and determine, stressing that officials will be brought to justice.
