Flood loss report due next week

During this year’s monsoon, strong floods took place in the Ravi, Sutlej and Chenab rivers. At the national level, the floods caused 1,037 deaths with 509 deaths reported in KP and 322 in Punjab.

Friday, officials of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) informed the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on recent planning and development

Chaired by the MNA Syed Abdul Qadir Gilani, the meeting was summoned to examine the elements of the agenda linked to recent damages, the scope and performance of the National Catastrophe Risk Management Fund (NDRMF) and flood prevention projects in Balutchistan.

NDMA officials told the panel that on the whole, 1,066 people were injured. Twenty-seven Punjab districts were affected.

The Urban Planning Secretary has declared to the committee that the work continued to prepare estimates of financial loss caused by floods.

The preliminary assessment was to be completed at the start of next week. He added that the government had also contacted donor agencies with regard to damages.

The floods that have struck the country this year have so far caused around 3,856 billion rupees in damages, while the economy faces 740 billion additional rupees of potential losses, officials revealed on Thursday.
