Food inflation hits daily bets

RAWALPINDI:

By the end of 2025, food staples like whole wheat roti, white flour roti, naan, paratha and even cups of tea have reached new spending heights in tandoors, carts and small hotels in the twin cities that are frequented by the poor in the hope of finding food at an affordable price.

Laborers who used to eat roti with tea for Rs 100-130 in trade markets, transport hubs, workshops and big markets are now finding it difficult to feed themselves. Last year, the price of red bran mixed flour roti was increased from Rs 14 to Rs 15, and its weight was also reduced by 30 percent, due to which red bran mixed flour roti became like papad and workers who used to eat one roti now have to eat two to feel full.

The price of white flour roti and yeast roti has been increased from Rs20 to Rs30, and the price of naan has been increased from Rs25 to Rs35. The prices of Tandoori paratha and oiled naan have increased from Rs40 to Rs60. The prices of fried tawa paratha have also been increased from Rs40 to Rs60. A cup of tea, which earlier cost Rs 70, has also been increased to Rs 100.
