If you thought Valentine’s Day was a hotbed for romantic television, think again. Between April and May, BBC iPlayer will become the home of Minta self-proclaimed romantic comedy-drama from the mind of Scraper director Charlotte Regan.
That’s enough information alone to sit me up, but the stacked cast – led by Emma Laird, Ben Coyle-Larner, Sam Riley, Laura Fraser, Lewis Gribben and Lindsay Duncan – means Mint is poised to be an absolute success.
While we still have to wait to enjoy it (the official release date has not yet been confirmed), the BBC has published a first preview. Combine the playful mystery of the game with the gritty, vulnerable realism that Regan always delivers, and Mint easily becoming one of my most anticipated TV shows of 2026.

Here is the full synopsis: “At the heart of Mint is Shannon, the daughter of her area’s dominant crime family, who is desperate for romance in the shadow of her father, Dylan.
“We will experience the obsession of first love as Shannon falls in love with Arran, a member of a rival crime family who has just arrived in town. Their love story presents an undeniable bond that changes their lives for good, but not everyone in their lives sees it the same way.
“While Shannon and Arran navigate their forbidden romance, elsewhere, things are imploding for Shannon’s family. Early in our series, Dylan decides to step down as head of the family for mysterious reasons. Sam, Dylan’s second-in-command, takes over, although his divergent tactics begin to raise alarms throughout our series.
“Following Dylan’s decision, instead of focusing on the world of crime or the politics of succession, we are immersed in the distinct emotional worlds of Shannon’s family – her parents, Dylan and Cat, her older brother Luke, and her indomitable grandmother Ollie.”
Tell me it’s not the case Romeo and Juliet with a typically British touch. Even the image above, on its own, could be a Renaissance painting. The BBC is never afraid of a TV show that feels completely unique, and I’m hopeful that Mint could push the boundaries of the genre. I mean, who makes the connection between romance and crime in the first place?
