Abdul Basit, former High Commissioner of Pakistan in India (2014-2017) and Germany Ambassador (2012-2014) and former, warned that New Delhi could launch military action against Pakistan a few days after the recent attack on Pahalgam.
Speak with The Express PK Press ClubBasti cited India’s past actions after Uri and 2019 Pulwama attacks in 2019 as a priority.
He said that the tone of the recent speech by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Bihar indicated a potential cross -border strike or other tangible measures.
“This can happen through the control line, on our side, then they would make major claims that they destroyed launch ramps and terrorist camps,” he said. “Whether it happens in a week or in about fifteen days, something will happen.”
BASIT believes that there are no immediate diplomatic problems for Pakistan, in particular with regard to the cancellation of the Industry Water Treaty, however, we can expect more terrorist actions in Balutch and other parts of the country, which suggests that Pakistan should accumulate more in -depth destabilization.
Turning to the announcement of India to suspend the Water Treaty of the Industry, the former High Commissioner described this decision as largely “symbolic” because of the current lack of infrastructure of India to divert Western rivers.
“At this stage, India cannot stop the flow of water,” he said. “The Industrial Water Treaty can neither be dismissed, suspended, nor unilaterally modified. It is a permanent treaty unless the two parties agree. ”
He urged Pakistan to hire the World Bank, the Broker and the Guarantor of the Treaty, and to prepare a robust diplomatic and legal response.
“India does not comply with its international obligations,” added the diplomat. “So much for the greatest democracy in the world and its aspirations at a headquarters of the United Nations Security Council.”
Despite climbing, he noted that there was no immediate threat to access to Pakistan water under the treaty.
