Former Minnesota Vikings captain and University of Minnesota football player Jack Brewer had to watch his family’s state get sued by the U.S. Department of Justice for refusing to exclude men from women’s sports.

The DOJ announced Monday that it is suing Minnesota educational agencies for their continued refusal to comply with President Donald Trump’s mandate to exclude biological male transgender athletes from women’s high school sports in the state. The DOJ alleged that the State Department of Education (MDE) and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) violated Title IX.

Brewer, who has been a vocal and frequent critic of the state’s Democratic leadership, called himself “sick.”

“And I’m sick of it,” Brewer told PK Press Club Digital.

“The fact that you have billions of dollars coming from the federal government to fund these twisted ideologies… That’s why you have such an increase in transgender across the United States, because of states like Minnesota that are literally brainwashing children.

“I have former teammates and family members who have to deal with the realities of these Minneapolis public schools, seeing the lack of respect that comes from these kids, seeing kids sexualized and celebrating whether or not you want to be with a man or a woman, just completely sexualizing them.”

Brewer condemned the state for its commitment to protecting transgender athletes, amid concerns about educational resources available to Minnesota’s black students.

“If they really cared about equality, then they would invest funds in the education of the most disadvantaged people, in the education of their children of color, but they don’t,” Brewer said.

Brewer praised President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi for their decision to sue state education agencies.

“President Trump and Pam Bondi are right to address this issue, and I applaud their continued leadership in protecting young women and girls – especially athletes – by defending the original intent of Title IX and the protections it was intended to provide. They should continue to fight to fix this. It’s common sense,” he said.

Minnesota has resisted changing its policies regarding transgender athletes. The state filed a preemptive lawsuit last year, saying the state’s human rights law supersedes President Donald Trump’s executive orders. The lawsuit said at the time that the state was already in compliance with Title IX. A ruling is expected on the federal government’s motion to dismiss the case.

The federal government said in a statement Monday that the state is violating Title IX “by forcing girls to compete against boys in all-girls athletic competitions and allowing boys to invade intimate, all-girls spaces, such as locker rooms and multi-person restrooms.”

The Justice Department has said MDE’s funding, which amounts to $3 billion a year from the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, is contingent on its compliance with Title IX.

The lawsuit asked Minnesota’s federal court to find that the state was violating Title IX.

“The Minnesota Department of Education is reviewing the matter and remains committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of background, zip code or ability, has access to a world-class education and every opportunity to thrive as their authentic self in safe and supportive school communities,” the department said.
