Joe Schmidt’s reputation is on the line during the 2025 Autumn International closing clash between Australia and France in Paris. After narrowly beating Japan, they lost three straight in Europe – it’s been 67 years since the Wallabies last suffered a four-game European shutout. Recent evidence, however, suggests that France is no longer what it used to be.

Schmidt, who will replace Queensland Reds coach Les Kiss next year, looked to have made serious progress at the 2025 Rugby Championship, but in recent weeks the Wallabies have been atrocious. Their last loss, a record 46-19 to Ireland, saw them miss six of their own field goals, four inside Ireland’s 22-yard line, and continue to wilt under the high ball.
