After a break of almost six weeks, the Champions League returns with matchday seven and what looks to be an extremely important match for Marseille and Liverpool. The French side find themselves 16th in the table with nine points from six games, three short of a place in the top eight, while the Reds are also outside the automatic knockout stages, but only on goal difference.
Although Marseille are lower in the table, they will believe they have a great opportunity to secure a crucial victory when they host Liverpool at the Stade Vélodrome. Roberto de Zerbi’s side have won their last two Champions League matches, a 2-1 win over Newcastle and a 3-2 win at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, and beat Angers 5-2 in Ligue 1 at the weekend.
Such was the weekend’s victory that De Zerbi was able to completely change his attack on the hour mark, giving Mason Greenwood, Amine Gouiri and Hamed Traoré a well-deserved rest. The trio were all on the scoresheet against Angers and will look to expose a Liverpool defense prone to individual errors.
The Reds effectively arrive undefeated in 12 matches, but there is a growing sense of frustration around the club. Arne Slot’s side have struggled to break down teams playing in a low block and were extremely useless this weekend, scoring just once from 32 attempts against 19th-placed Burnley.
Despite the negative side, there are some positives. Huge Ekitike continues to excel, while Florian Wirtz increasingly influences games and produces moments of magic. With Mo Salah also returning from the AFCON, Slot will be hoping his attack can spark and secure a crucial European victory.
