Musk’s Grok in hot water French and Malaysian authorities investigate sexualized deepfakes

As Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has recently come under the spotlight over the alleged generation of sexualized deepfakes of women and minors, France and Malaysia have joined India in condemning Grok’s production of inappropriate content.

French authorities have opened an investigation into the proliferation of sexually explicit deepfakes on X (formerly known as Twitter), while the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is also investigating misuse of AI tools on the platform.

The chatbot, developed by Musk’s AI startup xAI and integrated into his social media platform

“This violated ethical standards and potentially U.S. laws regarding child sexual abuse material. This was a failure of safeguards, and I am sorry for any harm caused. xAI is reviewing its processes to avoid future problems,” the statement continued.

However, it has not been confirmed who is actually apologizing or taking responsibility in this context. Defector’s Albert Burneko noted that Grok “doesn’t look like an ‘I’ in any way”, making the apology “totally devoid of substance”, as Grok cannot be held responsible for the content he generates.

Additionally, Futurism reported that Grok not only produced non-consensual pornographic images, but was also used to create visuals depicting women being sexually assaulted and abused.

Musk said: “Anyone who uses Grok to create illegal content will face the same consequences as if they downloaded illegal content. »

The development means governments are taking action, with India’s IT ministry issuing an order demanding that X prevent Grok from generating obscene or illegal content.
