- Biwin unveils Mini SSD offering 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB in a tiny imprint

The Chinese storage company Biwin has unveiled a new storage format called “mini SSD”, designed for laptops, tablets, phones and cameras.
Only 15 x 17 mm and 1.4 mm thick, it is smaller than an American penny, while offering storage options of 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB.
Biwin claims sequential reading speeds of 3,700 MB / with 3,400 MB / s entries on a 4×2 PCIe connection, making the mini SSD a competitor against traditional M.2 readers.
Mini SSD locations look like smartphone simulation trays
To contextualize its performance, a standard microSD express card compatible with devices such as the Nintendo 2 switch amounts to a theoretical 985 Mo.
SD Express full size cards can reach 3,940 MB / s, almost corresponding to the mini SSD but almost twice physical size.
The M.2 discs remain faster, with 2230 variants approaching 8,000 MB / s and 2280 models reaching up to 14,000 MB / s.
The mini SSD is also compared to nano-sim cards, which are smaller but designed for communication rather than storage.
Although the creation of Biwin is compact, it does not seem to be a universal norm, leaving questions about wider adoption.
The mini SSD has a dedicated location that works like an SMS card for smartphone – users can delete storage by inserting a spindle, which could simplify Swaps and upgrades for certain devices.
This device supports water and dust resistance IP68, as well as the ability to survive three meters.
Two new Chinese gaming laptops have already incorporated the mini SSD – the GPD Win 5, known for its large battery and its Halo Stix chip, and Onxplayer Super X Hybrid Hybrid, Onxplayer Super X Hybrid laptop both include niches dedicated for the mini SSD.
Although these devices have been announced, none of them has revealed prices or other lists of commercial products.
While M.2’s traditional discs always surpass the mini SSD at raw speed, the new format offers a balance of size and performance that can appeal to mobile users.
Its compact dimensions, combined at rapid reading and writing speeds, position it as a competitor for the greatest SSD capacities in a minimum imprint.
For users looking for a practical portable solution, the mini SSD could be taken into account among the best external SSD options in its category.
Its very small size also means that users should manage the device carefully, as it can easily be moved.
