Gilgit:
The administration of Gilgit-Baltistan prohibits the construction of new hotels around the picturesque northern lakes for five years which attract tens of thousands of tourists each year, said a government agency.
The unregulated construction of hotels in GB – which has around 13,000 glaciers, more than any other country outside the polar regions – has aroused major concerns concerning environmental degradation.
The natural beauty of the region has made it a superior tourist destination, with imposing peaks looming on the old silk road, and a highway carrying tourists between cherry orchards, glaciers and blue ice lakes.
