Staley addressed the incident in an interview with ESPN immediately afterward.

“I have no idea, but I’ll let you know, I have integrity. I have integrity,” Staley said. “So if I did something bad to Geno, I had no idea what I did, I guess he thought I didn’t shake his hand at the start of the game, I didn’t know, I went there before the game, shook hands with everyone on his team, I don’t know what we did after the game, but hey sometimes things get heated. We move on.”

Auriemma was seen shaking Staley’s hand in ESPN footage before the game.

Auriemma addressed the incident during the post-match press conference.

“I don’t want what happened there to detract from what we were able to accomplish today,” Staley said.

Meanwhile, Auriemma expressed his displeasure with Staley and the referees during an in-game interview on ESPN.

“There were six fouls called in that quarter, all against us,” Auriemma said on the broadcast. “And they beat our guys there all game long. I’m not making excuses because we didn’t make shots. But it’s ridiculous.

“Their coach rants and raves on the sidelines and calls the referee names you don’t want to hear. And now we get 6-0, and I have a kid with a torn jersey, and they’re like, ‘I didn’t see it.’ Come on, man. It’s for a national championship.”

After the match, Auriemma refused to provide further details about the incident.

“I said what I had to say and…nothing…nothing,” he responded when asked what happened with Staley, refusing to tell reporters what he had said.

“Why should I say it. I said what I said and obviously she didn’t like it. I just told the truth.”

Auriemma then addressed the pre-match handshake speculation and his mid-match interview.

“I have no regrets,” Auriemma said of his mid-game interview.

“I’ve been coaching a long time, I’ve never seen a kid have to change his jersey because someone ripped it and the official said he didn’t see it. A lot happened in that game. Unless you’re on the sideline, you have no idea what’s going on on that sideline…

“The protocol is before the game you meet at half court, has anyone ever seen that before? The two coaches meet at half court and they shake hands… they announce it on the loudspeaker. I waited there for about three minutes.”

Footage of the shouting exchange quickly went viral on social media, with many fans shocked by such a public clash between two of the most respected figures in women’s basketball.

ESPN star Stephen A. Smith blasted Auriemma for the incident in an X-rated post.

“This was pure stupidity from the GREAT Geno Auriemma. I never thought I would see the day when the greatest women’s college coach in history would go down so CLASSLESS!!! Looks horrible, and should be called out for it. He was OUTCOACHED,” Smith wrote. “Pleasant and simple. And faces her like she did something bad to him instead of being kind. If Dawn Staley had acted like that, we’d be all over her.”
