Karachi:
Friday, a court of first instance of the country’s economic hub acquitted the president of the Senate, Yusuf Raza Gilani, and other accused in all the cases deposited during the reign of the PML-N in 2013 in relation to a scandal of Pakistan (TDAP) of the Pakistan Commercial Authority (TDAP).
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had filed a total of 26 cases against Gilani – who was the Prime Minister of the country between 2008 and 2012 – for having pretended to have been 5 million complaints of subsidies illegally as part of a TDAP program. Gilani had faced cases for 12 years.
The Karachi Federal Anti-Corruption Court acquitted the PPP chief in three TDRA cases on March 8, 2025 and nine cases TDAP last week on July 11. The judge announced his verdict to pay Gilani and others in the 14 remaining cases on Friday.
During the procedure, assisted by the president of the Senate, the judge president noted that he had examined each case separately, heard all the parties thoroughly and made the decisions to pay the accused on the basis of the files received from the High Court.
Speaking to the media after the hearing, Gilani’s lawyer, Farooq H Naek, said that all of these cases were based on complaints by a specific individual. He declared earlier that Gilani was also declared absurd even after obtaining a deposit in 10 cases.
Naek said the court had now done justice by rejecting all the allegations and paying Gilani. He thanked the judge and described the major legal victory decision against the false accusations.
Speaking on occasion, Yusuf Raza Gilani said that the allegations were politically motivated and false, but he was grateful to God for having been fully acquitted of all cases.
He appreciated the legal expertise of his lawyer Farooq H Naek, and underlined the urgent need for legislation to ensure that the pending cases are resolved and are not suspended indefinitely.
