- Former Call of Duty director Glen Schofield is unhappy with the direction of the series under Microsoft
- He said: “I’m very worried about it” in a recent interview
- He also commented on the decreasing quality of titles since his departure
Glen Schofield, former director of numerous Call of Duty titles at Sledgehammer Games, appears to have little hope for the franchise following Microsoft’s takeover of Activision Blizzard.
In an interview with VGC at Gamescom Asia, Schofield criticized the management of the Call of Duty franchise under Microsoft, and after his departure from Sledgehammer Games in 2019. At the studio, Schofield had led the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011), Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, And Call of Duty: World War II.
“It worries me a lot, really,” Schofield said of the first-person shooter franchise. “Because what happens to War equipmentwest Halo… you know what I mean?”
Schofield added: “Unfortunately, once you’re assimilated by one of those companies, I think you adopt some of their traits. The other thing is I don’t know, but I guess the Call of Duty bonus system came out, and now you have theirs, and people are going to say ‘that’s not it’.”
Schofield then spoke about Call of Duty games released after his tenure at Sledgehammer, also citing the negative impact that the departure of key staff members would have on large-scale projects like this.
“I hate doing this, but since I left Sledgehammer, none of the games have been very good,” he told VGC. “They always sell well. You know, it happens. You move. I always ask myself ‘why did you eliminate this guy, it won’t work later’, and it very rarely works.
After leaving Sledgehammer, Schofield continued to direct The Callisto protocol, which aimed to recapture the horror and atmosphere of the original Dead space – which Schofield also directed during his time at EA – to a rather mixed reception.
